The J1 Summit is MJPW's annual heavyweight tournament occuring during each August. Typically, it is conducted in a round-robin format where the top fighters from each block face each other in a semifinals and final match occurring between the winners of the respective blocks. This lengthy tournament is fought over a multiple week time period. If the MAX-J Heavyweight Champion does not win the tournament outright, the winner receives a shot at the championship.
The 2017 tournament marked the beginning of MJPW's tenure and the winner would become the first MAX-J Heavyweight Champion. The two blocks were categorized based on whether a fighter held a Japanese nationality or not, resulting in a native vs. gaijin block system. Although ZENKI would go perfect in the native block, in the finals he would lose to "Mighty Fine" Mike Musket, a catch wrestler who had moved to Japan and taken up residence on Mt. Fuji. Mike Musket would become the first champion of MJPW.
