A nondescript warehouse sits on a lonely corner on the outskirts of Yokohama. Evening has fallen over this seemingly abandoned edifice. Hot night encapsulates the warehouse in a perpetual shimmer.
But inside the warehouse, past the thick concrete walls and padlocked doors, scientists scurry about in the frigid cold. In a bright and sterile laboratory, the jet-black figure of METAL HERO stands upright. Wires like the broken wings of angels plug into his diagnostic ports and feed data into their machines which add digital beeps and burps to the already frantic scene.
He turns his glassy, obsidian helm upon the MAX Jr. Heavyweight title that sits alone upon a glass high table like a sultan’s crown jewel.
An emerald beacon begins to flash on a monitor and a scientist in a white lab-coat opens up a panel on his titanium armored shoulder. The crimson, cybernetic eye in his helm increases its intensity.
The scientist closes the panel on his arm and the high-speed whirring of motors becomes a shriek. Turbines throughout the laboratory blast the air and send papers and notebooks into tornado-lie chaos, alarms on high volume pulse their oppressive warnings, the lab technicians flee in terror.
But METAL HERO stands alone.
As he walks over to the table to snatch up the MAX Junior Heavyweight title, the wires attached to his chassis snap and fall around him. He clasps the championship around his waist.
His crimson, laser eye blooms with retina-burning intensity, a rose-colored nuclear blast.

People of the world, the time has come to bear witness to the first defense.

Before I returned to this planet, I witnessed the corruption of the old ways and the ghastly mutation of the people’s collective soul. Now, as I look upon the masses, I see that modernity has become a nonsensical paradox. In their greed, men and women rail against their governments to shower them with blessings and cash while they threaten annihilation and revolution. Yet the very same who fantasize about the destruction of faraway capitals are possessed by such sloth that they dare not extend the hand of charity to the hobo that dies upon their doorstep. Instead they watch television for hours upon end and masturbate to the ecstasy of violence and iniquity brought to them by media idols and mega-corporations. They fill their lives with inertia and confections.
At times, I wonder if I am still more human than the sad and pathetic lot that now considers itself humankind.

To stand for this world, MAX-J has nominated James Edwards. The “Burning Heart”. The man of the Violent Gospel. Indeed, that it should be so. Indeed, that this avatar of the human race should possess the duality of man – capable of extreme violence yet incapable of mastering its profoundness. Your image recalls my stubborn countrymen in October 1944. As the United States Navy pummeled our forces into submission at the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the fools could not see what laid before us. They developed the KAMIKAZE and plunged our sons into the hulls of the Americans’ ships to meet an end of gnashed, twisted steel and flames.
I see such an end for you, Edwards-san. A warrior without fear, a man of many talents and abilities…
… but I am METAL HERO. The strongest and most advanced warrior that civilization has ever produced. Yes, it is true, we are all forged by this world. Man, the social creature that he is, cannot escape its grasp. And let it be known, we are all subjects to the divine masters. God, the kami, Buddha, Allah, Marduk… and yet…

… and yet these are only the gods of earth. Meet the warrior born of supreme knowledge and cybernetic wonder!

I, METAL HERO, have conquered the heavens! As the earth’s new champion, I will not allow the degeneracy of modernity to continue to poison this world. With a strength that surpasses the old gods, my defense of the world begins!
