Somewhere deep in a Fukuoka forest, underneath a Japanese evergeen oak, Daichi Kusumoto stands in his fighting stance. The wind rustles the still green leaves, shaking the branches, but the oak remains unfazed by the wind as the leaves are by the changing of the seasons. It was planted here over a hundred years ago, next to an old Shinto shrine. The shrine has long since been abandoned and overgrown, but the oak remains unfazed, as green as ever.
Dressed in full wrestling attire and soaked in sweat, he raises his right arm and drives the elbow into the trunk of the tree. His breathing is heavy - he’s been doing this for a long time now - but he still puts all the force he can muster into each shot.
He lets out a scream, partly out of pain and partly to gather strength, as he fires off another elbow into the tree. It feels like his elbows are burning like firewood in a furnace, but he knows that he needs to do everything in his power to get stronger, and he knows that his will strengthen him.
Right now, he’s not strong enough. Sure, his ring rust has been shaken off and he’s undoubtedly started to get back into the rhythm of things, but that’s not enough to keep up with the younger generation. He witnessed it first hand against Lynx. Even if he managed to catch the young speedster, he couldn’t finish the job. He let Lynx regain his speed, and then he just couldn’t keep up. Back in his hay day, a couple of elbows would’ve been enough to beat Lynx so loopy that he couldn’t come back from it.
But this is not then, this is now. And now he needs to focus on what’s ahead of him. Not just the tree, but his match against Masanori Kawada. Although in a way, this match will be a lot like an elbow hitting a tree.
Another elbow hits the trunk of the tree and leaves a dent in both the bark and the bones inside the arm.
Kawada will be fighting this match with injured ribs. Some would think that’s a disadvantage. In a way it is - a crumbled body will not be good for a fight - but a warrior is not his body. With a strong enough spirit a crumpled body will not be an enemy, it will be an ally that shows you where your weaknesses are. And once you know where they are, you can hit them until they die.
The tree cracks and tiny pieces of bark fly off and scatter in the currents of the ever-increasing wind as another elbow lands.
During this tour he has been in the ring with Kawada several times, both on the same side and the opposite. He has been impressed with what he has seen, but he has yet to have seen how strong “The Everlasting Hero’s” spirit truly is. He hopes that it is strong as he has heard. Hopefully even stronger. Because just like his elbows can only grow stronger if the tree won’t yield, his spirit can only strengthen if Kawada won’t give up.
Kawada has to let his weakness strengthen him. The Golem Tiger will be the tree to his elbow, just like Kawada will be his. That’s the circle of life. Opposite forces of nature clashing into each other, two opposite gusts of wind intertwining to make the other stronger, to create a storm. A storm that will destroy everything. Everything but the strongest of oaks.
