Touring Japan had always been on David’s bucket list, ever since he first laced up a pair of wrestling boots.
Like many people in that time, he was involved in tape trading. He delivered many newspapers and washed many cars to be able to buy tapes of obscure companies in Japan, loaded with matches featuring names he had never heard, with play-by-play in a language he didn’t understand, and moves he had never seen before. He had Japanese versions of video game consoles, solely so he could play the Virtual Pro and Fire Pro games.
David Troy wanted to tour Japan more than anything.
He finally did in the early 2000s, and even established himself in the junior heavyweight division of a small indie promotion based in Hokkaido.
But this was different.
He was coming to Japan as CHAMPION OF THE WORLD. He was going to make his FIRST defense of that championship on Japanese soil; while the hefty sum offered him by Genki Sano didn’t discourage him from going on this tour, there was something deeper to behold this tour.
This was more than a business trip for David; this was a homecoming. He was here to show the country that took him in and helped him develop as a wrestler what he’d done so far. He wanted to make them proud. This was where he found the motivation to continue wrestling. Where he found love. And now, he was bringing glory back with him.
He stared out his hotel room window. In a distant corner, Mushigihara was napping; the former sumo wrestler also known as the God-Beast had missed his home land, and appreciated David’s invitation to join him on this Maximum Japan tour, even asking for paperwork to tour with them in the future.
David was ready to go into that arena in Fukuoka, and tell the fans who took him in that he did them justice.
The thought made him smile.
