Cold open.
David Troy is looking out into the Tokyo night sky. The last time we found him in a setting like this, he had tears in his eyes as he bid Maximum Japan farewell and pondered his next move; now, though, he has confidence in his eyes, and a grin.
“I walk the champion’s road.”
As luck would have it, a large golden belt lays on the Western-Style bed near him. The words “World’s Heavyweight Champion” stand out on the belt’s centerpiece.
“It is a road that only those who put in the hard work and sacrifice get the privilege to even see, much less tread. But here I am. Back home, they call me Champion of the World. But here… I’m just one of sixteen men lined up to do battle throughout the Pacific Ocean. Max-J’s gonna go on a world tour, and they’re kickin’ it off with this tournament for the Royal Road Championship. Some folks might say I’m at a disadvantage, that my skills skew more towards Strong Style, but I’ve never been one to turn down a challenge.
“Especially when the field includes some names from my past, as well as the future of this business fresh from the lovin’ arms of that yahoo Mike Musket.”
A chuckle.
“Those kids? All of them are just like I was at that stage of my career. Young. Hungry. Tough. And those traits will do them well here in Max Japan. But unfortunately for a guy like Hiro Minamoto, it takes much more than youth, hunger, and toughness to defeat someone like ME. And unless Minamoto’s a ridiculously fast learner, he’s going to have his hands full with me in Korea. Hell, those kids are gonna have their hands full with some of the best in the world.
“You got James Edwards; a man I’ve faced twice. He’s got a rep as one of the best pure fighters in the sport, and it’s well-earned. AJ Knight; 24 years old, and the world is his oyster whenever his head’s together. We’ve had our spats in the past, but honestly, I respect the HELL out of him, and if we lock up again, I want to see how I stack up to him after so long. Alex Irvine, the man’s flipped off Father Time so often that clocks stop in his presence. Tough as a bull, and twice as stubborn. And then there’s those crazy Demon Brigade bastards!”
David smiles and shakes his head.
“All of them hungry, just like I was.”
He turns his head towards the world championship resting at his bed.
“Just like I still am. The Champion’s Road isn’t easy… but nothing that’s worth the struggle ever is easy. And this road’s gonna take us around the world, so it’s gonna be a long trip.
“A trip that will end with me taking my place on that Champion’s Road.”
He turns back to us and grins.
Cut.
