TOUKON ROAD: BLITZ PACIFICA
Day 3
MANILA, PHILIPPINES
2/21/2019
The reports about TOUKON ROAD’s poor showing in Hong Kong seemed to be all that the news media could talk about this week. But don’t tell that to the fans in Manila where at the Mango Dome 8,500 fans showed up to watch a show that would feature Chris Ravenna, the Philippines’ native son, challenge MAX Jr. Heavyweight Champion Eron “Lynx” Hunter in the main event. Who would prevail? Let’s take you to the action.
AJ Knight and Hercules Cendana
vs.
GRIM and Falcon Hamada
The Filipino legend Hercules Cendana teamed up with AJ Knight to get the evening started against the Demon Brigade’s own GRIM and Hamada. Although there were a lot of zealots in the audience, there were still not enough to overpower the hometown crowd as Knight and Cendana would isolate Hamada, with the former hitting a superkick on Falcon that sent him right into Cendana’s Filipino torture rack to pick up the submission win.
Mushigahara, David Troy, and Umetaro Sakamoto
vs.
ZENKI, Tokyo Zombie, and KOSUKE
On the penultimate night of the tour, this would be the last occasion for us to see the Heavyweight champ ZENKI and his #1contender Mushigahara interact. In the previous tag team match they fought on Day 1, the two kept their distance. But tonight, we saw much more interaction. ZENKI would attempt to use his speed, but it didn’t make a difference as Mushigahara drew on his sumo skills to keep him in front of him, at one point hitting a Gargoyle suplex that had the champ looking rough. Mushigahara nearly had the three count when Zombie grabbed his foot and pulled him outside of the ring under the bottom rope!
Later in the match, we would see David Troy pick up another fall, using Mushigahara as a springboard, leapfrogging him to hit a flying knee on KOSUKE to pick up the 1-2-3. Reportedly, management has been impressed with Troy and Mushigahara’s teamwork and they are being discussed as #1 contenders for the Tag Team Championship, regardless of the outcome of the title match two days from now.
MAX Royal Road Championship Tournament - Semifinals
Shinjiro Nakama
vs.
Alexander Irvine
In the semifinals, we saw “Mountain” Shinjiro Nakama and “the Unnatural” Alexander Irvine lock horns. The last time these two met, it was Nakama who got the upper hand. What would be the result this time?
Well, Irvine was determined from the get go not to let that happen. But locking up in the clinch with Nakama proved deadly as the two locked up traded knee strikes into their chest repeatedly. Each man diminished the other, but Irvine’s superior technique allowed him to score the takedown and get into the mount over Nakama as he went for the armbar. However, Nakama’s strength allowed him to buck Irvine off of him and the two would reset.
Nakama would pin Irvine back into the corner and hit a few heavy, ponderous roundhouse kicks to Irvine’s chest. However, he would eventually catch a kick and hit a Dragon screw and take a series to target the massive legs of Nakama.
Irvine would allow the wounded Nakama to get up to his feet and attempt a brainbuster, but he would not be able to get it. Nakama would fight back with chops – but Irvine would hit a kick to the gut and then nail the Evenflow DDT! He’d hook the leg and pick up the 1-2-2.9999! Just barely would Nakama kick out.
What happened next would send the crowd into a frenzy . Once they got back up to their feet, the two would just start with overhead chops with turned into open hand palm-strikes to the face, bruising Irvine’s jaw and opening up a cut over Nakama’s eye! The Mountain would stumble back as Irvine went in for the Battle Cry! But Nakama would duck and then snatch up Irvine for his high-angle German suplex hold, picking up the 1-2-3 in the process and sending the MOUNTAIN advancing to the final!
MAX Royal Road Championship Tournament - Semifinals
James Edwards
vs.
Hiro Minamoto
Minamoto’s run to the semifinals has seen him take down David Troy and GRIM in stunning upsets. Could he do the same with the “Burning Heart” James Edwards? The two would lock up early and at one point trade roundhouse kicks to the chest much to the approval of the fans. Edwards’ shoot-style influence would see him get Minamoto on the ground after a high kick, but instead of going to the mat, the striker Edwards would allow him to stand back up.
As the match continued, the Prophet of King’s Road picked up steam, hitting a flash German suplex for a two-count and then a series of jumping high kicks that would stun Edwards. Minamoto would go to the top rope for a diving knee drop and… it would connect! He’d cover for a 1-2-2.9 count!
With Edwards stunned, Minamoto would seize the momentum and drop him for a half-nelson suplex. He’d pick him up for another half-nelson suplex… and drop Edwards one more time! As Edwards sat up, he’d run forward to a “dangerous” face kick ~ but Edwards sat back to avoid it, kipped up, hit a Fisherman’s buster, and then nailed his patented Violent Gospel for the win, moving to the finals where James Edwards will meet Shinjiro Nakama!
World Tag Team Championship
Go Gensai and Frank Dylan James (c)
vs.
Jacob Hammerstein and Thunder Mask
The GHOST ARMY came out to the ring in helmeted garb, an intimidating sight for the audience that looked upon them and took many pictures of the World Tag Team Champions. However, the fan favorites of the night where Jacob Hammerstein and Thunder Mask. Once the action got started, Hammer used his imposing presence to rough up Gensai with multiple stinger splashes and then hitting a Diamond Cutter for a 1-2-2.5 count!
FDJ would enter the fray to push back Hammer, but a hurricanrana by Thunder Mask would send him tumbling through the ropes. For a few moments, Hammerstein and Thunder Mask had Gensai one-on-one, roughing him up with chops from the former and roundhouse kicks from the latter, culminating in a double brainbuster! Hammer would attempt another pin and this time go for 1-2-2.999! Gensai’s kickout would surprise everyone, and before the challengers could put it to him again, the Pale General rolled to the outside.
FDJ and Hammer had a battle of strength that saw the champ push Hammer into the corner and boot a big boot on his throat for a choke, prompting a count from the referee that FDJ broke just before it was too late. He repeated this and then threw Hammer to the ground, hopping onto the second rope while the fans got nervous… he went for a knee drop… and it connected! Hammer appeared done and he tagged in Gensai who dived in for a springboard senton splash and then went for the 1-2-2.99!
Gensai’s technique would ground Hammer with headlocks and attempts at an armbar, but the “American Monster” battled back to tag in Thunder Mask who came in with a spinning roundhouse kick to put down Gensai, who stumbled into the corner! FDJ would tag in as Thunder Mask jumped to the top rope and attempted a moonsault ~ but the West Virginia Mastadon caught him and drove his skull into the mat for a Tombstone Piledriver and cover for the 1-2-3! The referee would hand the belts back to the Ghost Army as Hammerstein checked on a prone Thunder Mask as we went to commercial break.
MAX Junior Heavyweight Championship
Eron “Lynx” Hunter (c)
vs.
Chris Ravenna
The fans had waited on this one all night long. The Chris Ravenna t-shirts even outnumbered the Demon Brigade zealots. But as Eron Hunter walked out to the ring, with the Jr. Heavyweight title around his waist, a fierce determination had many in the crowd nervous.
The match got started with the kind of chain-wrestling for which the MAX junior division has become famous. Ravenna wrenched Hunter’s arm, but the acrobatics of the latter saw him front roll onto the ground to break free, grab Ravenna’s arm and flip him onto his back! On the ground, we’d see the two men trade hammerlocks, and then a grounded headlock by Hunter would be countered with a headscissors that would once again flip the momentum of the ground game.
But Hunter would kick out of it and the two scrambled to their feet. The champ would bounce into the ropes and rebound, Ravenna would attempt a roundhouse kick and miss, as Hunter would springboard off the middle rope for a moonsault ~ but it was a little high ~ yet he turned it into a reverse DDT! Hunter would get a two-count as the fans remained impressed but worried at the outcome.
Hunter would keep up the action with a couple of quick elbow drops but then picking up Ravenna and throwing him into the corner. He’d get a running start, cartwheel, and attempt the elbow ~ success! Ravenna would stumble out as Hunter would rebound and ~ Ravenna would intercept him with a pele kick that sent the champ tumbling through the ropes to the apron! The challenger would go for the suplex to bring him back in… but Hunter reversed it and suplexed Ravenna to the outside, much to the horror of the crowd! Hunter would then ascend to the top rope and measure the distance… as Ravenna stumbled up to his feet… Hunter would front flip over and land on Ravenna!
Hunter would be the one who got up first, naturally, and threw Ravenna inside and went for a cover that garnered him a 1-2-2.75 count. He’d get Ravenna up for a running DDT, but the challenger would reverse it by driving Hunter into the corner! Ravenna would hit a few shoulder thrusts into the midsection of Hunter before backing up and ~ SHINING WIZARD from Hunter!! ~ The champ would surprise him and get the 1-2-3-WAIT-A-MINUTE-FOOT-ON-THE-ROPES! Hunter would be in disbelief as the fans breathed a collective sigh of relief.
Hunter would utilize a few soccer kicks against a mostly prone Ravenna before standing him up and putting him back down with a release dragon suplex!! ~ but Ravenna would roll up to his feet and rush forward for a discus big boot~ARTIKULO UNO! He’d go for the pin and get the 1-2-2.999999999! The fans would wail and scream as the two men laid flat on the canvas.
Ravenna would get to his feet first and grab Hunter by a handful of hair and… small package cradle by Hunter! 1-2-2.999999!! The surprise pin would seem to fire up both men as Hunter got up to his feet first and went for a spinning roundhouse kick ~ miss! ~ while Ravenna would attempt a spinning backfist ~ miss! ~ but Ravenna followed it up with a second backfist that hit and put Hunter on a knee ~ and then Ravenna nailed a buzzsaw kick! Hunter appeared stunned when Ravenna backed up and… basement ARTIKULO UNO! Ravena would hook the leg and go for the 1… 2… 3!
It seemed like all of Manila erupted as Ravenna fell to his knees and the referee handed him the MAX Jr. Heavyweight Championship. After Hunter passed the medical checkup, he walked over to Ravenna, patted the belt, and told him to wear it with the same respect he’d shown it for the last half-year. Ravenna nodded and returned to celebrating in the ring, holding up the flag of the Philippines as he stood on the second-rope to the cheers of the adoring fans.
We're back on the road but in two days we will be in India for the MAHATMA SUPER WORLD PEACE SAISHI and we'll see some unusual matches on the midcard. In a sport form rules match, GRIM will take on the technician Go Gensai in what is sure to be a match full of cruelty. On Twitter this week, Alexander Irvine and Jacob Hammerstein have fought like cats and dogs. However, on 2/23 they will be on the same team in a six-man tag match. We'll have to beef up security, but it should still get interesting!
In the penultimate match, we will see the finale of the Royal Road tournament with Edwards vs. Nakama, but also finally witness the main event. Can "Demon Lord" ZENKI defend the MAX Heavyweight title against the upstart "God-Beast" Mushigahara? The interactions have been limited so far, with Mushigahara almost pulling out a fall in tonight's tag match. But we've seen ZENKI defy the odds too many times to count! By the end of 2/23, we're bound to know the answer!
