MJPW presents...
PYRAMID GRAPPLING LEAGUE
7/14/2018
Fugu Hall, Shimonoseki, Japan
A sold-out crowd of 2,500 fans descended upon Fugu Hall for the final day of the PYRAMID GRAPPLING LEAGUE. Prior to the league final which would pit “Swedish Wrestling Machine” Matt Pulver versus “Mountain” Shinjiro Nakama, MAX-J put on a fan festival with merchandise booths and meet-n’-greets with fighters. During lunch, Mike Musket and his dog entertained the fans by getting in the concessions and commandeering a deep fryer, even letting one of the chefs teach him how to make sushi.
After the concessions died down, the arrival of the Demon Brigade led by MAX Heavyweight Champion ZENKI stole the show. Hundreds of the all-black clad “Zenki zealots” poured into the arena to pose with ZENKI and the World Tag Team Champions, GRIM and Tokyo Zombie. ZENKI took the microphone to thank the fans. He beamed with pride that the MAX titles were all in the hands of Japanese and declared that he would ensure it stayed that way. He also stated that all three members of the Demon Brigade would compete in the J1 SUMMIT and fight for the soul of Japan.
General Manager Masaaki Sano took the stage later that afternoon. He had two major announcements. The first concerned the MAX Junior Heavyweight Championship, confirming that METAL HERO, who was not competing in the tournament, would make his V1 defense on the final day the SUMMIT. His opponent? TBD. But this was still exciting news.
The second announcement concerned the J1 itself. The tour would begin in earnest on 8/1 and feature 10 fighters divided into 2 blocks. Unlike last year’s blocks, populated either with Japanese or foreign fighters, this year they would be mixed together. He promised that early in the week he would release the full list as well as the tour schedule to help the fighters make travel preparations.
After Sano dropped the mic, all attention turned on the league finals of the PYRAMID GRAPPLING LEAGUE. “Mountain” Shinjiro emerged from the back first with laser-focus aggression on his face. The mostly Japanese crowd seemed in his corner. Former MAX Jr. Heavyweight Champion Matt Pulver appeared a bit more loose, donning a yellow-and-blue singlet in the colors of the Swedish flag. Though he got his cheers, the Demon Brigade fans characteristically booed and shouted for Nakama to “step on the gaijin!”
Thanks to MJPW’s special relationship with ENSOU! TV we can broadcast the league final for you live. Enjoy!
Ring attendants clear away streamers. Shinjiro Nakama is in black half-tights as he stretches a massive hunk of leg on the top rope. Pulver in the Swedish-colored singlet bounces on his toes and stretches his neck from side-to-side.
TIM FLOSS:
Well, Al, we are here. It’s Mountain Shinjiro versus the Man of 1,000 Holds Matt Pulver. I think Pulver’s gonna need all of ‘em here tonight.
ALBERT MORDECAI:
Oh, you said it, Timmy! Look, let’s not play pretend or anything here: Pulver is the more skilled grappler in the ring. But Nakama has got an 80lb advantage in terms of sheer weight and size. This is gonna be interesting to see how both men approach the situation.
TIM FLOSS:
All right, then, well, here we go!
The referee speaks a few words to both men, backpedals, and calls for the opening bell! Round 1 begins with the two fighters dancing around one another a bit. Pulver goes for a quick shoot to the legs but Nakama backs off and then throws a low kick that misses. Pulver’s on his feet and Nakama lumbers toward him, swinging a meaty paw and Pulver ducks it just in time!
TIM FLOSS:
Nakama’s like a bear in the ring! Good god!
ALBERT MORDECAI:
Open-hand strikes are legal, Timmy. That’s just smart offense.
Pulver creeps in, but before he can lock up with Nakama the big man slaps his thigh with a low kick, the sound of the smack echoes throughout the quiet, attentive arena! A lone “NAKAMA!” chant cuts through the arena as well. Pulver shakes it off. He goes for an outside single leg takedown but can’t get through and takes a kick but just get his forearm up in time for a block! Nakama raises his chin with defiant flamboyance to oooooh’s from the crowd.
TIM FLOSS:
You can see that Pulver is at a loss for how to break through here in the early going.
ALBERT MORDECAI:
Nakama has the advantage in reach, so anytime Pulver comes in he risks eating a kick to the face or having to lock up with the big man. Here’s the truth, Timmy: Nakama’s in control here.
Pulver backs up again and shoots in once more, this time going for Nakama’s front leg… he’s got it! Nakama is hopping on one foot and slapping at Pulver’s head as the Swedish wrestling machine backs him up and into the ropes, trying to drive him to the ground but the ropes are preventing him from doing so.
ALBERT MORDECAI:
Going for that front leg was risky, Timmy. If he doesn’t catch it, Nakama’s got him right in his crosshairs with a roundhouse!
TIM FLOSS:
Well, we’re halfway through the round. Eventually you knew he was gonna find a way!
Nakama has one arm draped around the top rope to prevent himself from falling and the referee yells at him to let go, going as far as to forcibly remove it. Nakama goes to the ground but Pulver remains on his feet and starts launching kicks into the hamstrings of Nakama, who is on his back! Nakama reaches out with a kick, but the referee reminds him that only kicks with the top of the foot are allowed. Nakama yells back at the referee in Japanese.
TIM FLOSS:
What do you think Mountain Shinjiro is yelling about?
ALBERT MORDECAI:
I think he’s trying to convince the referee that he’s not kicking Pulver but trying to push him away. I don’t think the referee is buying it.
Seeing that Nakama can’t kick him from that position, Pulver tries to control Nakama’s feet. The big man wriggles his boots away. Pulver lands a few kicks, finally grabs a boot and throws the foot to gain side control! What a move from Pulver! Nakama is trying to buck him off, but Pulver is hanging on as he’s chest-to-chest with the big man. He’s trying to grab one of Mountain Shinjiro’s long arms, but bouncing around is making it difficult. Pulver finally grabs a hold of one of the arms! He’s in position for a key lock!
Pulver’s got his hand grapped around his own wrist tight as he’s trying to crank the hold…
Nakama fights…
Pulver leans into the hold, gaining leverage…
Nakama fights…
… he’s got nowhere to go…
Pulver cranks it!
… THE BELL SOUNDS! ROUND 1 has ended! The referee sends the fighters to their respective corners.
TIM FLOSS:
How close was Pulver there?
ALBERT MORDECAI:
Very. A few more seconds and he might’ve got position. But let’s give Nakama some credit here. He showed tremendous patience. A lot of fighters would have panicked but he kept his cool.
TIM FLOSS:
What do you expect for the second round?
ALBERT MORDECAI:
I think Pulver has deciphered the kicking defenses of “Mountain” Shinjiro. We’ll have to see if the big man has any more tricks up his sleeve!
TIM FLOSS:
Alrighty then! Let’s start Round 2!
The bell rings and the fighters return to the ring. Nakama comes on the attack this time, backing Pulver away with kicks. It’s quickly obvious he’s trying to pin him in one of the corners. Pulver escapes, but Nakama is back on him quickly, chasing him across the ring before he finally achieves his goal of pinning him down! Pulver is covering up as he anticipates the kicks and palm strikes from the big man, who offers a few fakes but lands a handful of strikes. Pulver ducks a palm strike and tries to escape… wait! He’s caught! Nakama has him in a rear waistlock!
TIM FLOSS:
Uh-oh…
Nakama’s got his fingers clasped around Pulver’s waist. The crowd is on their feet in the early goings of this match! Nakama crouches in a base.
ALBERT MORDECAI:
Don’t tell me he’s going for a…
Nakama arches his back and drops Pulver onto his head with HIGH-ANGLE GERMAN SUPLEX!! Pulver’s head bounces off the canvas and he goes spilling halfway across the ring. Nakama clambers up to his feet and goes after Pulver who crawls around like a man searching for his glasses. Nakama runs at him with roundhouse kicks, but Pulver is rolling away. As Nakama drops atop him, Pulver goes into a turtle defense! Nakama is on his back, trying to lock on a rear naked choke, but Pulver somehow manages the strength with an elbow into side to push Nakama overtop him and the hold is broken and the two men both stare at each other from a knee!
TIM FLOSS:
My gawd! How is Matt Pulver even alive right now?!
ALBERT MORDECAI:
That boy’s on autopilot, Timmy! Shinjiro Nakama with a picture perfect German suplex, it was like watching a six and a half foot tall slinky bend back perfectly and take Pulver along for the ride! Oh man!
Nakama has a few words for the ref, motioning with his elbow that he believes Pulver used an illegal elbow strike to the ribs. The ref has a few words for Pulver, but it’s not obvious that Pulver is in a mental state ready to comprehend them.
The bout continues as Pulver shoots in and tries to take the front leg again, but Nakama is ready for it and locks up Pulver in a front-face lock! Both men are on the ground and Pulver is once again in the turtle defense. For a moment, both men seem to just lay their catching their breath.
TIM FLOSS:
How badly does Shinjiro just want to knee Pulver in the back of the head?
ALBERT MORDECAI:
Big time, baby! But knees are illegal, so he’s going to have to find another way!
Nakama is trying to get a guillotine locked in but is having no success. He tries to pass around to the rear, but Pulver manages to slip away and the two men lock up while they’re on their knees. Nakama quickly overpowers Pulver, but the latter catches him in a full guard. Pulver has to keep it open since Nakama is a bit too big for him to close it up by crossing his ankles… Nakama is trying to pass the guard, but Pulver uses his flexibility to a pin his lower leg onto the back of Nakama’s neck to hold Nakama in a rubber guard! Nakama’s head is pinned against Pulver’s chest!
TIM FLOSS:
Pulver’s got a trick up his sleeve!
ALBERT MORDECAI:
Man of a thousand holds!
Pulver is exhausted and glass-eyed as he keeps the rubber-guard locked on for dear life. He has a free arm but can’t seem to make a play for a submission. He tries to move his other leg up the back of Nakama, but the man is just too big. Nakama starts trying to muscle his way through and Pulver converts back to an open guard! But wait! Nakama tries to pass through – he gets halfway there! Pulver has his legs scissored around Nakama to keep him from passing all the way through!
TIM FLOSS:
The Swedish Wrestling Machine is hanging in there! Only a minute left in the round!
ALBERT MORDECAI:
Let’s see if Nakama has it in him.
Pulver is hanging on for dear life as Nakama tries to go for one of Pulver’s arms, but the Swedish Wrestling Machine locks in a double underhook and the two men are chest-to-chest. Nakama manages to get an arm free, and he tries to slide a forearm on Pulver’s throat! The smaller Pulver ducks his chin down to prevent the choke… Nakama gets the other arm free – but Pulver scoots back and locks in the full guard once again!
And the bell sounds! Round 2 is over!
TIM FLOSS:
Well, looks like both fighters survived the two rounds meaning that this bout will go to the judges! How did you score this thing, Al?
ALBERT MORDECAI:
This one’s gonna be close. Pulver definitely had some offense going and did score that takedown in the first round, but he got bottled up for most of the second. Shinjiro’s angelic German suplex clearly did its damage, but he was never able to really get on the offensive due to Pulver’s instinctive maneuvering in the guard. This one’s gonna be close!
The two fighters stand in the ring. The referee stands between them, gripping a fighter’s wrist in each hand as we wait for PA Announcer Burton Fask.
BURTON FASK:

BURTON FASK:
Ladies and gentlemen, this fight has gone to the judges. I have received the scorecards and will present them momentarily...
He pauses...
“Judge 1… NAKAMA!”
The fans pop...
“Judge 2… NAKAMA!”
The fans pop again once more, applauding knows that Nakama has at least scored a decision...
“Judge 3… PULVER!”
The fans gasp...
“Via split decision from the judges’ the winner of this bout is Shinjiro Nakama!”
The referee raises Nakama’s hand into the air and the big man immediately takes several steps forward and roars to the approving crowd.
“This outcome gives Shinjiro Nakama 4 points while Matt Pulver ends the tournament with 5 points. Therefore, the winner of the PYRAMID GRAPPLIN LEAGUE… is Matt Pulver!”
Shinjiro Nakama is apoplectic as Competition Committee chairman Rokurou Murakami steps past him with the hand-held-sized pyramid trophy and hands it off to the still-groggy Matt Pulver who is being looked over by medics. Nakama points over in Pulver’s direction as security personnel jump between them.

TIM FLOSS:
I don’t think Shinjiro Nakama is aware of the rules here, is he? He thinks that trophy belongs to him!
ALBERT MORDECAI:
I’m pretty sure he’s lost track of the point totals for the league. Yes, he won a hard-fought match here tonight, but he needed a unanimous decision or better to win the league overall. Pulver came into this match with 6 points, Nakama with 3. A split decision doesn’t win the day here.
Nakama is in a furious state and starts shaving away security personnel! GM Masaaki Sano and Chairman Murakami flee as the Mountain is going berserk! The ring clears as Nakama savagely wades through the mass of security and medical personnel that separate him from Matt Pulver.
… and Daichi Kusumoto in street clothes coming running down the aisle and slides under the bottom rope!
TIM FLOSS:
What’s he doing here?! Kusumoto has yet to make his debut, Al.
ALBERT MORDECAI:
I saw him signing autographs earlier. And I think he’s gonna make his debut right here tonight!
Kusumoto stands in front of Pulver and instructs the Mountain to back off. Nakama laughs… starts to back away… and swings a haymaker! Kusumoto eats it on the chin and launches back with a few of his own! The fists are flying in the ring!
… and Mike Musket jumps into the fray! He has a taped up shoulder and he pushes the two men away from one another, yelling “this ain’t the time and place!”
… a massive pop from the fans go up through the arena…
As Tokyo Zombie… GRIM… and ZENKI stand on the ramp and stalk toward the ring!! The Demon Brigade is one their way... The action in the ring pauses as the crowd goes up in a frenzy.
… and then another pop... cameras flash...
… as METAL HERO appears! The masked cyborg wrestler has the MAX Jr. Heavyweight title slung over his shoulder as he stands at the entranceway! The Demon Brigade members turn around and now have the sense of being surrounded!
TIM FLOSS:
Good god! It’s like someone told them there’s a party in the ring or something!
ALBERT MORDECAI:
These guys want to be where the action is!
TIM FLOSS:
Folks, I wish we had more time, but we’ve got to go! We’ll try to get the footage out later this evening, but until then we’ll see you in a few weeks for the J1 SUMMIT! Good night!
The scene fades Reinforcement security guards come down the aisle and position themselves around the fighters like human shields, levies hoping to hold back the madness for just a few more weeks until the J1 SUMMIT begins… and all hell breaks loose.

Location: Fugu Hall, Shimonoseki, Japan
1. Final – Sport Form Rules: Shinjiro Nakama [4] defeats Matt Pulver [5] (R2 8:00) via judges’ decision (split). Pulver wins the league having accumulated the most points.
