At this point in history, the current MAX Heavyweight Champion Mike Musket sat atop the world. He had won the title and the J1 SUMMIT back in August and had recently completed a V1 defense against his rival ZENKI back in September. There were seemingly no contenders in sight. However, during October's Sword of Lite Grand Prix, Chrenshaw choked out the heavyweight champ during a tag team match and earned himself a shot at the gold at MJPW's next event, HOLY MOUNTAIN, scheduled for 11/30/2017 at the Hachioji Metropolitan Center in Tokyo.
As a part of our promotion leading up to the J1 SUMMIT, we will now re-broadcast this match live for a television audience. Enjoy!
MAX HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
Mike Musket (champion) vs. Ben Chrenshaw (challenger)
11/30/2017
Hachioji Metropolitan Center, Hachioji, Tokyo
As we come back from commercial break both men stand in their respective corners, Chrenshaw stares forward as he stretches his neck and rolls his shoulders, Big Ol’ Country bounces a bit in his from side to side, pointing to the crowd he says hello to the ladies and sup to the fellas. The MJPW GM Masaaki Sano holds the title belt over his head in display to the crowd. He exits and takes his seat at ring side as the two men walk to the center of the ring to discuss with the referee.
TIM FLOSS:
Well folks, we've come down to our main event of the evening. Tonight’s sure been a rollercoaster of events but everything has been leading up to this.
ALBERT MORDECAI:
No doubt, Tim. This match is sure to be a hell of a match, like locking a pyro in a room with a man raised by wolves. One wants to watch the world burn while the other is forging for mushrooms.
The ref sends both men back into their corners and the bell sounds, both men coming in carefully. Musket raises his arms up for a test of strength which gets a low rumble from the crowd, Chrenshaw assumes the position as well and slowly inches forward as he wiggles his fingers in the air. The rumbling starts to build as the tension does as well, just before their fingers touch Chrenshaw springs forward and elbows Mike in the stomach which causes him to bend over as he grabs his belly, Chrenshaw locking on a side head lock and wrenching it tight.
TIM FLOSS:
Good thinking in Chrenshaw’s part tonight Al. He knows he ain’t got the strength to go toe to toe with a man who learned the art of fur trapping when Jimmy Carter was learning how to destroy the country.
ALBERT MORDECAI:
Big Country is 12 dollars short of a full tank of gas in the old turnip truck if you ask me, but he’s got skills. I’ll give Chrenshaw the edge on the mat but not by much, that Catch Wrestling background really trips up most people in the ring. It’s like fighting a southpaw in boxing.
Mike takes a small step forward and postures up as he reaches for Chrenshaw’s waist to go for the backdrop, but Chrenshaw is a step ahead as he steps forward pushing down on Mike’s head, repositioning for a front headlock that quickly flows into the snap suplex. Without releasing the hold Chrenshaw rolls both men onto their knees and pulls Mike deep into a front headlock. Mike makes a mistake and tries to roll, exposing his neck, Chrenshaw quickly latches onto a guillotine choke, but with great ring awareness Mike stretches out a leg and places in on the bottom rope. The ref brings both men to their feet.
TIM FLOSS:
You can feel the respect that these fans have for these two men and their crafts Al, only in Japan can a match start with so much technical expertise and still have everyone hanging on every move.
ALBERT MORDECAI:
Theres nothing like these fans, Timmy. They aren’t just looking for entertainment, they want to see action, but they also want to see the art. Truly a rare type of fan.
As the men return to the center of the ring Mike is quick to throw a hard one-two combo into the jaw of Chrenshaw that gets the man stumbling into a corner. Musket lets out a howl as he rushes into the corner and starts lighting up Chrenshaw with body blows. Each time a blow connects Chrenshaw’s body almost contorts into the types of food he’s eaten in the last few days, the last punch to the stomach sending him to the mat like a bag of rice as he starts gripping his midsection.
ALBERT MORDECAI:
DAMN!
Musket grabs Chrenshaw by getting a handful of his hair and pulls him up onto his feet and tosses him into the corner. He gets in close with Chrenshaw for the grapple and the steps back as he whips Chrenshaw into the opposing turnbuckle. As Chrenshaw does slamming back first into the turnbuckle he immediately makes a mad dash out of it looking to take Mike by surprise but Big Country smelled what he was cooking a mile out and lifts up his big boot and it meets Chrenshaw right in the jaw sending him down into the mat…BUT MIKE’S NOT DONE! He goes running backwards into the ropes and comes running forward landing a ATOMIC LEG DROP!
TIM FLOSS:
MY GAWD! FROM BACK IN TIME!
ALBERT MORDECAI:
Watcha gonna do when Musketmania runs into the wild on you?!?!
Mike goes for the cover.
1…
2-NO! Chrenshaw kicks out.
Both men now roll to their feet and start trading blows in the center of the ring. Chrenshaw lands clean jabs and body shots to Mike, but the man who brings home the bacon takes everyone as he throws some wild, hard haymakers. Eventually Musket ties up both Chrenshaw’s arms with unhooks and lands a sickening belly to belly suplex. But both men move to their feet and come at each other once again, this time Chrenshaw gets the upper hand with a hard headbutt that causes Mike to take a knee. Chrenshaw runs back against the ropes and comes rubbing forward and grab hold of Muskets head for and old-fashioned bulldog.
TIM FLOSS:
Another blast from the past.
ALBERT MORDECAI:
It’s like he hit 88 miles per hour to land that blow Tim.
Chrenshaw scrambles over mounts the back of Musket, pulls his right arm back and reaching across with his left to hook on a deep chickening crossface, pure pain and discomfort pours onto Muskets face. Chrenshaw bows his own body while maintaining the mount to apply more pressure to the shoulder as he wrenches back Muskets neck.
Musket bellows out in pain…
The ref slides in front of him and asks is he ok…Musket just grunts.
Chrenshaw brings Muskets shoulder blades together as he attempts to bring his own elbows closer to apply more pressure.
The ref moves closer and asks Musket if he hands to give. Muskets clenches his left and slams in against the canvas as he screams no….
NO…NO…NO…echoes out as he continues to beat his fist on the mat. With uncontrollable might he seems to almost power his way out of the entire hold, the veins in his neck begin to bulge from the sides of his neck as he inches it’s way forward, the second Chrenshaw releases the hold on his beck Musket rolls the right while clasping his right elbow tight to his body to trap Chrenshaw. Musket lands on top of Chrenshaw and manipulates his control over Chrenshaw’s right arm as he maneuvers his own body and locks on an armbar…
Chrenshaw quickly reaches out and grabs the bottom rope, forcing the ref to break the hold.
TIM FLOSS:
Seems that Mighty Fine might be able to hold his own on the mat even against the likes of The Crippler.
ALBERT MORDECAI:
That’s only because he’s a few years away from being The Crippled, eating early bird specials.
Both men are a little slower this time as the clamber up onto their feet but Mike again is the aggressor this time on their feet and starts landing chops across Chrenshaw’s chest, the fans start counting…
1…2…3… Chrenshaw stumbles back...
4…
5…
6…
Mike’s backed him against the ropes and again sends Chrenshaw running to the side, this time in hot pursuit, BUT Chrenshaw JUMPS OVER THE TOP ROPE WHILE HOLDING IT, which sends Musket toppling over the rope and smacking against the concrete floor softened only the thin mats on the outside.
ALBERT MORDECAI:
Say what you want, but Ben Chrenshaw is one crafty son of a bitch.
TIM FLOSS:
Mike may have more hooks that a slaughterhouse…
ALBERT MORDECAI:
But Chrenshaw’s got more tricks than Tijuana hooker!
TIM FLOSS:
Albert…you need help.
Chrenshaw has already dropped to the mat and rolled back underneath, getting to his feet he shakes a few of the aches and pains out of his body, his opponent only having gotten enough energy to get on his knees with his forehead still on the mat as he slumps over, breathing hard. The ref starts making the count.
1…
2…
3…
4…
The fans close to him can he heard whispering words of encouragement to him, but even their best efforts at motivation are Lost in Translation to the hick ears of the MAX-J Heavyweight Champion.
5…
6…
7…
He makes it back to his feet, the fans cheering as he makes his way back into the ring.
TIM FLOSS:
What a champion!
ALBERT MORDECAI:
What a dumbass!
Musket heaves his body up from the mat to a knee, but the Crippler is already on top of him. Open handed blows to the head, kicks to the thigh, exposed portions of the midsection. Musket has no choice but to cover up. It isn’t until Chrenshaw backs up and then starts to run forward as if going for a kick that would make James Edwards proud that he summons enough energy to spring to his feet as he catches the leg with and underhook, reaching tightly around Chrenshaw and sends him hurling over his head in a captured suplex that lays both men out on the mat. Both men laid out and panting hard.
The ref check on both men and begins the count.
1…
2…
3…
Both men stir…
4…
5…
Chrenshaw makes his way to a knee first.
6…
7…
Musket pulls himself up by the ropes.
8…
9…
Both men make it to their feet and the ref checks on them both before signaling for the match to continue.
The men make their way over to one another and trade a good back and forth. Mike punches, Chrenshaw chops, Mike chops, Chrenshaw punches, Mike locks on a solid wrist lock control, Chrenshaw counters with his own and positions with his own as he takes Mike’s back…but Big Country lets out a howl and starts to stumble back and uses his weight to crush Chrenshaw against the turnbuckle and goes running into the ropes charging forth with a mighty roar as he comes forward with his mighty lariat…
BUT Chrenshaw DUCKS UNDERNEATH, Mike goes into the other ropes making another mad dash for Chrenshaw who counters with a BIG DROPKICK, sending Musket crashing to the mat. Chrenshaw quickly gets to his feet and makes his way to Musket who has rolled over onto his stomach and grabs the leg and YES….LOCKS ON THE WRINKLE IN TIME!
TIM FLOSS:
MY GAWD, MY GAWD, WASABI AND STICKY RICE!
ALBERT MORDECAI:
He’s wrenching so far back the he is turning purple, Timmy!!
Big Ol' Country grabs the back of his head with both hands as he shakes it from side to side. The ref already before him as he wallows in pain. The ref asks if he gives up, his cries of no being met with Chrenshaw lowering himself to a knee as he bends back.
Big Ol' Country cries in pain…
The ref is inches from his face, Muskets head rattles from side to side UNTIL…
HE TAPS! Big country’s paws smack again the mat as he yields to the pain, Chrenshaw releases the hold and falls to the mat as well! The fans are going nuts!
TIM FLOSS:
He’s done it! He’s done it! Ben Chrenshaw is the new MAX Heavyweight Champion!
ALBERT MORDECAI:
Incredible showing by both men tonight! I can’t believe it!
MJPW GM Masaaki Sano enters the ring to deliver the MAX Heavyweight Championship to Chrenshaw. The Crippler takes it in his hands and nods to Sano. He wraps the belt around his waist and stands silently in the ring, seeming to soak up the situation. In the audience, we can see Pulver and Edwards applauding Chrenshaw’s effort. Kawamata can be seen with a smirk.
BURTON FASK:
Ladies and gentlemen, your winner... and NEW MAX HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION... BEN CHRENSHAW!!
Back in the ring, Mike Musket has gotten up to his feet. He limps over to Chrenshaw. Chrenshaw glances down at the title around his waist. The new champion extends a hand to the old… but Musket doesn’t accept the handshake. Instead he goes in for a big friendly bear hug! Chrenshaw seems a bit uncomfortable but carries through with the gesture, though he wears an almost embarrassed grin while doing so. Musket grabs Chrenshaw by the wrist and raises his arm to the applause from the audience as the scene fades out.
