Japan.
The true home of wrestling.
The land of true competition.
And if there was one thing that Jon Kellar longed for, it was sport. The incident with Vernon Vanderbilt and Joshua Samson had robbed him of his career, but as he looked out across the Tokyo Skyline and watched the sun slowly rise above the towers, the pain seemed to ebb away. The neon lights bounced off the window as he sipped his tea.
He yawned, the flight had taken it out of him. Nothing depleted a tolerance for travel more than a few years away from the life. He checked his watch again, but there was no time to sleep now. He'd have to power through.
From the two guest bedrooms came the buzzing sound of the alarms. Kellar yawned again, cleared his throat.
Kellar: ALRIGHT! UP!
From one of the bedrooms emerged Hiroyuki Masaki. The Golden Son ran his hand along his face and stretched. No one emerged from the second bedroom.
Kellar: Kono! UP!
Nothing. Kellar rolled his eyes and made his way to the second guest room. He pushed the door open and there was the second half of the Sons of Gold
Kellar: Kono.
Kono: What?
Kellar: That buzzing sound you can hear, that's the a...
Kellar looked over to the bedside table and saw the alarm had been disconnected from the wall. Kellar grit his teeth and glared at Kono Masaki, who grinned back at him.
Kono: What buzzing noise?
Kellar bit his bottom lip and took a deep breath. He spoke slowly, pausing every few worlds to swallow the urge to punch Kono square in the jaw.
Kellar: Kono... get up, get out there... and start prepping breakfast.
Kono didn't move. Kellar grabbed the sheets and pulled them off of him
Kellar: Get out there or I will drag you out there by your balls. MOVE!!!
Kono rolled his eyes and rolled out of bed, making his way to the kitchen where Hiro was already prepping the eggs for the pancakes.
Hiro: Mr. Kellar, where's the oatmeal for the pancakes?
Kellar: Err.. third cupboard... top shelf.
Hiro turned and reached into the cupboard.
Kono: Why am I here? Golden boy's already prepping breakfast.
Kellar: You can start prepping the smoothies. Knives on the counter, the fruit's in the fridge, the powder's in the same cupboard as the oatmeal.
Kono grunted and made his way to the kitchen. He barged passed his brother as he headed to the fridge, prompting Hiro to utter some Japanese obscenities under his breath. Kono turned and the two squared up to one another.
Kellar: Enough!
The two separated. With a look of resignation, Kono made his way over to the fridge and opened it. He reached in and pulled out a bottle of water and bag of pre-packed fruit. Hiro mixed the oatmeals into the egg-white and began stirring the mix in the pan. Kellar pulled a chair up to the raised counter.
Kellar: Now, I spoke to Max-Japan last night and the line-up is confirmed. It's exactly as we expected, we have a six-man tag on the 8th, then a standard tag on the 10th. Both exhibition matches, no titles.
Kono grunted as he loaded the fruit into the blender and started spooning in protein powder from a nearby bag.
Kellar: I know, but work with me here. You two haven't tagged for over two years, and you didn't even make it through that without punching each other. I can't ask them to trust you with a title shot. You're teaming with Shinjiro Nakama for the six-man, then you'll have the chance to show what you can do against Umetaro Sakamoto & Balloon Yamazaki.
Hiro nodded intently as he listened along, stirring the pancake into shape. He lifted the pan and flipped it into the air, catching it perfectly.
Kellar: What is good news is that Yamazaki is also in the six-man, so you'll get to "feel him out" in the first match. Given his weight advantage that's no bad thing. I'm also going to speak to Nakama before the first match and see if he's got any particular strategy...
Hiro tipped the looked up from mixing the pancakes.
Hiro: Mr. Kellar... I have conc...
Kono switched on the blender, drowning his half-brother out. Hiro rolled his eyes and waited for the mixer to stop.
Hiro: I have concerns about teaming with Nakama. He's... well... he doesn't fight with honor. Our father...
Kono: Your father.
Hiro: Our father, would never have tolerated the things he does.
Kellar: We are not in a position to make demands Hiro.
Hiro: I know, but...
Kellar: No buts, this is where we are. It's done, and frankly having a 285lbs man in your corner is no bad thing. Especially with Balloon Yamazaki coming the other way...
Kono: I can take anyone.
Kellar: I don't need you "take" anyone Kono, I need you to listen.
Kellar signed.
Kellar: Look, this team needs to be a team or this isn't going to work. Being a team isn't just about slapping hands, holding ropes and delivering double team moves in the ring. You guys have to trust each other, you have to rely on each other, you have to work for each other, you have to make each-other better.
Kono: By eating pancakes and drinking smoothies...
Kellar raised his finger and pointed to Hiro with a smile. Kono turned towards his half-brother as the Golden Son handed him a plate of pancakes. Kono took it. Hiro smiled, Kono glared and turned away. Hiro looked down, dejected, as he handed the third plate to Kellar. Kellar cleared his throat.
Kellar: Kono...
With a sigh, Kono lifted the blender jug and poured three glasses of the fresh protein shake. He handed one to Kellar, took one for himself and, after a pause, handed one to his brother.
Kellar: That's better.
Kellar raised his glass to his two proteges. For the first time in a long time, a sense of optimism crept across him.
Kellar: This team... will be... a team.
