It’s been less than a week since the final of the PYRAMID GRAPPLING LEAGUE which resulted in a controversial decision between Matt Pulver and Shinjiro Nakama. The fight went to the judges and Nakama won via split decision, 2-1. However, despite the victory, the number of points Nakama accumulated in this victory was not enough to overcome Matt Pulver’s standing in the league overall. Thus, Matt Pulver was deemed the winner of the league.
Shinjiro Nakama immediately displayed his discontentment by thrashing virtually everyone in the ring before Daichi Kusumoto rushed in to help the security staff. In the past recent days, Xpress Fighting Systems - the agency that represents Nakama - has declared that an investigation be conducted on the matter of the lone judge who decided in favor of Matt Pulver, putting forth the accusation of bribery.
So, what do we know about this judge? His name is Toshio Kaneda, and prior to being hired as an MJPW competition judge he spent the last decade and a half as a mixed martial arts and catch wrestling referee under National Sports League of Japan (NSLJ), one of the top governing bodies of professional sports. He appears to have impeccable professional credentials.

This morning, I received a tip from a confidential source at the MAX-J headquarters close to the situation indicated to me that the company’s internal affairs division has in fact opened up an investigation of bribery and Kaneda-san is listed as a person of interest! MJPW General Manager Masaaki Sano addressed the media this morning by first stating that they have not yet allegations against Kaneda and will address the media at the earliest opportunity.
