How things had changed in a year.
A year ago he was World Champion. A year ago, the two of them were gearing up for a superfight in August.
Now the two were partners, taking on the world and gearing up for an opportunity at glory.
“I think he’s dead AJ.”
But just like last year, GRIM was one of the champions he was chasing. But now his partner was a relative unknown, while AJ was no longer saddled by a treacherous scumbag such as Ben Crenshaw. His partner was now one of the finest wrestlers alive.
“AJ… AJ! Snap out of it damn it!”
AJ Snapped back to reality, realizing he was leaning against the ropes, Jeremy Squire sprawled out on the mat in front of him. Billy was peering down at the unconscious Squire.
“Sorry, zoned out.”
Billy could only roll his eyes in response. “What? You? No! I couldn’t imagine. As I was saying, you killed Jeremy!”
AJ stared at the limp carcass of Jeremy Squire. He certainly looked like it… “No, he’s fine…” AJ nudged him with his foot, prompting a rather pitiful slap to AJ’s knee, from the still unconscious Squire. “... See?”
AJ couldn’t fault Jeremy Squire. Even AJ was shocked by how hard that had landed. He was feeling the effects of it himself.
Billy shrugged. “Where the hell did that one come from?”
“I don’t know. It just sort of happened.” AJ was just as surprised as anyone, he’d never hit something like that before.
“Well if you can pull that off again, those tag belts are as good as ours. Do you think you could do that again?” Billy said likewise leaning on the ropes.
“I can try!” AJ began to set up for it a second time.
“Not on me you psycho! It was hypothetical!” Billy grabbed a hold of AJ’s arm “Do you want to have to go it alone on Saturday?”
AJ awkwardly scratched the back of his head. Billy had a point, that would have been an immensely dumb move. Doing it a second time in such rapid succession, couldn’t have been good for him either. After all he was still sore from last time.
A long pause followed, broken by AJ chiming in.
“Never thought I’d live to see the day Billy.”
"June 27th?"
Now it was AJ’s turn to roll his eyes. “No, I mean you and me fighting for the Tag Titles. After all, we’ve been trying to knock each other out pretty much since we met.”
“Given what almost happened just now, that hasn’t changed much.”
“Old habits die hard.”
“Fair point.”
AJ looked around. “It’s nice to know that I’ll actually be able to rely on. Unlike the last guy. I swear Irvine was the world’s best commercial for birth control, Crenshaw would have sold his own mother to get ahead, but at least I know we’re on the same page. Good thing too. I’m so sick of them.”
“Who?”
“The Demon Brigade. Ever since I’ve shown up here, they’ve been an outrageous pain in my ass. Cockroaches honestly. Zenki left, Zombie left, and yet they Demon Brigade won’t die. They act like the stalwarts but what have they ever actually done for this company Billy? Tried to chase foreigners away? Alienate western fans? Dress like hot topic rejects? Meanwhile I exposed the company to its widest audience yet when I graciously decided to defend my title at one of their shows. Work you continued by signing a contract here too!”
AJ continued rambling seems to bore Billy who yawns, before interrupting “And work we’re going to finish by taking those tag belts from them. And if we can do that to them, there’s not a damn thing they can do to stop us. Right Jeremy?”
Squire finally begins to stir “My favorite Color is seven!” He proclaimed seeming utterly drunk. AJ felt a little bad at this point, he knocked something loose in his head. He’d have to buy him a drink later. But still he couldn’t help but feel proud at that shot.
Jeremy soon got his bearings about him, looking at AJ glassy eyed “What did you hit me with?”
A good question to ask: What do you call a thing like that? A great weapon needs a name after all. The weapon to free Max Japan from the Demon Brigade at last. A name to strike fear in all that hear it. Suddenly he knew. “The Morning Star.”
