J1 SUMMIT DAY 4
8/15/2018
MIRAI DOME, YOKOHAMA, JAPAN
The Mirai Dome was on fire tonight.
Literally.
About twenty minutes before the first bout was scheduled to begin, the fire alarm began going off and prompted a brief evacuation from the arena. What caused the fire, you may ask? It seemed that a coterie of Demon Brigade zealots started what resembled a bonfire on one of the concourses! Apparently, the zealots built a mountain of MJPW merchandise from gaijin – coonskin caps from Mike Musket, Edwards’ BURNING GOSPEL and Hammerstein’s brand-new PYTHON SLEEPER t-shirts – and lit the pile aflame! Fire marshals who interrogated the suspects said that this wasn't so much a case of arson as a protest movement against the gaijin competitors in the tournament. Apparently, the suspects believed that burning the merchandise would purify MAX-J from the unholy gaijin influence.
After the fire department cleaned up the mess and the fans returned to their seats, we got started with a six-man tag. Nakama and Hammerstein teamed up with the lovable curmudgeon of MAX Dojo, Hiro Minamoto, to take on METAL HERO, Jun Vegas, and Shensi Dashi. It was a back and forth affair with Hammerstein and Jun Vegas notably getting into a chopfest that would end with Vegas knocked back the American Monster with a roaring elbow to the cheers of the crowd! In the end, it would be Minamoto who would pick up a win for MAX Dojo after hitting a vicious half-nelson suplex on Dashi and getting the 1-2-3.
The all-Demon Brigade bout was a highly anticipated matchup and it did not disappoint. Zombie and GRIM showcased the technical skills of both wrestlers. We’re accustomed to seeing GRIM deploy underhanded tactics, but he took Zombie to the mat with a hip toss and grounded headlock that he tried to transition to an Anaconda Vise but the Buddhist monk pushed himself out of the headlock and the two fighters applauded as they stared each other down.
Back on their feet again, Zombie and GRIM locked up and it was the former who backed GRIM into the ropes with a series of chops to the neck and then a Saito suplex for a two-count. Zombie would back up and then hit a rolling Koppu kick that would send GRIM tumble through the ropes onto the apron! After suplexing him back into the ring, Zombie would get into the mount and lock on a cross armbreaker, but GRIM would slither out and as Zombie got up to his feet nail a superkick! GRIM would cover for a 1…2… NO! Zombie kicked out.
GRIM would keep the action hot, nailing a release Northern Light suplex and then a hangman’s neckbreaker. As a woozy Zombie got up, GRIM crept from behind and went for a rear naked choke! He nearly got the hooks in, but Zombie tossed him off. He would go for a Mongolian Chop, but GRIM blocked it and trapped both of Zombie’s arms. Let’s take you to the action…
The scene focuses in on the ring. The fans are shouting and clapping as we see GRIM in the black-and-blue singlet has trapped the arms of Tokyo Zombie in the white gi pants and his body tattooed in Buddhist sutras. They stand in the center of the ring, nose-to-nose.
TIM FLOSS:
Folks, it’s hard to say what’s going to happen here. These two fighters are right up against one another, belly-to-belly, and it is intense!
ALBERT MORDECAI:
These two have scrapped it up good, Timmy, and without having resorted to sinister tactics! It’s been an honorable showing thus far –
Zombie seemingly interrupts Al’s speech when he lands a headbutt to the skull of GRIM! The King of the Dead keeps the arms hooked and… returns the favor with a headbutt of his own!
ALBERT MORDECAI:
Well, I guess that’s out the window!
TIM FLOSS:
I guess you can say they are butting heads!
Zombie with a headbutt! Then GRIM! Zombie! GRIM! Zombie! GRIM! Zombie! Zombie! Zombie! GRIM loosens the hold and stumbles back. Zombie runs forward with the shining axe kick – RISING ZOMBIE MOON – but GRIM blocks it! Zombie is prone on all forces and GRIM jumps on his back with a rear naked choke – but Zombie slides out of it and LA MAGISTRAL CRADLE!!

GRIM sits up, somewhat baffled at the result. He smacks the canvas before approaching Zombie. The two zealots shake hands as GRIM raises Zombie’s arm and the fans applaud the effort. The two men exchange good words with one another before walking up the ramp together, but not before visiting with the Demon Brigade zealots in the front row.
PA ANNOUNCER-BURTON FASK
AND THE WINNER OF THIS J1 SUMMIT BOUT... TOKYO ZOMBIE!!
With that win, Tokyo Zombie guaranteed himself a spot in the semifinals with 6 points and tie-breakers over Nakama, Edwards, and the now eliminated GRIM who will end the tournament with 2 points. After the match, reporters asked the humble Tokyo Zombie how he felt about moving on and who he wanted to face in the semifinals. He told them that a true warrior does not allow himself to succumb to desire.
In the second match of the tournament, it would be the Demon Lord ZENKI taking on Mitsuo Shimada. The MAX Heavyweight Champion handily dealt with his competitor, forcing him to tapout with an armbar. Once the match concluded, a figure jumped the guardrail – it was the young woman obsessed with Shimada! As he clambered up to his feet, she threw his arms around him and began kissing him incessantly. The referee pulled her off as the victorious ZENKI opened his arms to young woman, inviting her to give him a kiss! The crowd roared with laughter as security once more dragged her away.
With his elbow clearly in pain from Musket’s repeated arm locks, Kusumoto would struggle to keep consistent offense going against the Man of the Mountain, trying to clinch up with Musket for knee strikes. But against the wily hillbilly this would only get him into trouble, as Musket would once more take him down to the mat with an STO and go back to work on the injured arm of Kusumoto. This time, however, Kusumoto would wrap his legs around Musket and flip him over to achieve a full mount and started raining down the open hand palm strikes! Kusumoto would get him up to his feet and then hit a release German suplex! Kusumoto would cover for a two-count before picking up Musket and running him into the ropes, only to drop him with a running high knee! Let’s take you to the action…
Musket in the dark brown tights is down on his back after eating a knee while Kusumoto in the black-white half-tights stretches out his elbow with the pad on it. Kusumoto would pick him up and gather him going for a BACKDROP DRIVER! But Musket sinks elbows into the crown of the Golem Tiger’s head and – BURNING LARIAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kusumoto’s big head bounces off the canvas as Musket hooks the leg!

WAIT!!!!!! Kusumoto kicks out!
TIM FLOSS:
My gawd! Kusumoto kicked out! He kicked out!
ALBERT MORDECAI:
He’s a tough nut to crack, Timmy!
Musket is on a knee and shakes his head. He grabs Kusumoto’s wrist and starts dragging him to the center of the ring and stands him up on his feet. Now it’s Musket’s turn for the BACKDROP DRIVER – Kusumoto breaks the hold and nails a ROLLING ELBOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Musket drops like a bag full of nails and Kusumoto covers him with a pin!

2…
3-NO!!!!!!!!!!!! Musket gets a shoulder up. The fans cheer like mad!
TIM FLOSS:
These two men have the fans on their feet! The sound is thunderous!
Kusumoto and Musket are both on their feet! Elbow from Kusumoto! Chop to the chest from Musket! Elbow from Kusumoto! Chop to the chest from Musket! Elbow from Kusumoto ~ he backs off, clutching his arm in pain as he bends over at the waist.
ALBERT MORDECAI:
That arm has taken a beating from the Mountain Man! It was a smart move on his part focusing on it!
Musket slides up behind Kusumoto and – SLEEPER HOLD!!! Kusumoto is writhing in pain as he stretches his arms out and grasps for the ropes but can only grope at the air. Eventually he starts to wear down, his eyes slump, and his body is motionless. With nowhere to go, the referee leans in and inspections the Thunder Beast.
The ref picks up the arm… it falls.

The ref picks up the arm again… it falls again.
2…
The referee picks up the arm again… IT FALLS AGAIN!
3-WAIT!!!!!!! Just at the last moment the hand clinches in a fist and slowly rises. The fans are going nuts as he regains the strength to break the hold – ROLLING ELBOW!!! Musket stumbles into the ropes – Kusumoto kicks him in the gut and hits a NORTHERN LIGHTS BOMB!!!!! Kusumoto is going buck wild and jumps up to his feet – he hits the running senton splash to Musket’s stomach and jumps up! Musket sits up holding his stomach and doesn’t see Kusumoto rushing in with the SLIDING ELBOW~GOLEM TIGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He’s got the pin!

3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The bell sounds!
TIM FLOSS:
My gawd! Kusumoto with a frenetic assault here in the final moments has defeated the former heavyweight champion!
ALBERT MORDECAI:
He went into beast mode, Timmy! Kusumoto has arrived! He’s a force to be reckoned with!
The referee raises Kusumoto’s hand as the scene fades out. Kusumoto nods to the fans and then clutches his elbow with an icepack as he heads toward the back to the approval of the crowd…

In the final match of the night, James Edwards versus Robb Daniels would see the two men go at it with ferocious strikes. The two former King of Lions Champions would engage in a hellacious battle with Daniels usual cautious strategy getting thrown out the window and instead launching pummeling stomps and brawling attacks against Edwards’ more refined precision strikes. Edwards would hit a headscissors takedown that threw Edwards across the ring and he’d jumped on the Headliner with a triangle chokehold to score the tapout submission, giving Edwards his second victory in the tournament!
With only one more day remaining here in the block stage of the J1 SUMMIT, let’s examine the standings.
In Block A, MAX Heavyweight Champion Demon Lord ZENKI’s tournament is over and has secured himself a spot in the semifinals. The winner of Hammer and Musket will determine which of the two fighters will reach the next stage. Kusumoto has been eliminated from the tournament based on tiebreakers while Shimada cannot attain enough points.
Tokyo Zombie is 3-0 in Block B and has locked up a second spot in the semifinals for the Demon Brigade. Like the other block, it will be the James Edwards versus Shinjiro Nakama match that will determine who makes it into the semifinals. GRIM and Daniels are both eliminated.
BLOCK A
ZENKI [6]
Mike Musket [4]
Jacob Hammerstein [4]
Daichi Kusumoto [2]
Mitsuo Shimada [0]
BLOCK B
Tokyo Zombie [6]
Shinjiro Nakama [4]
James Edwards [4]
GRIM [2]
Robb Daniels [0]
Going into 8/21, we have two out of the four spots in the semifinals already locked up while four fighters will compete for the remaining two.
Catching up with last year’s winner Mike Musket, he told the press that he will use his experience to overcome Jacob Hammerstein and catch him in his Wolf Trap Sharpshooter. Hammerstein took a less gregarious approach and before walking off declared that he “wouldn’t let that white trash son of a bitch get one over on him”.
Arnold Cunningham, Nakama’s representative from Xpress Fighting Systems was boastful that a “skinny mini” fighter like Edwards could not possess the intestinal fortitude to matchup with his client. Cunningham recommended that Edwards simply forfeit the match to avoid major injury. Edwards stated that in his travels he’s cut down fighters of all sizes and simply promised that Mountain Shinjiro would not be the last.
The stage is set for 8/21, folks. Very soon we’ll have our 4 semifinalists – you won’t wanna miss it!
